austin healey
drewvandergrift asked:

I have replaced the coil – but I am still getting no spark. I’m going to work with the distributor today.

What should I look for with the distributor when I work with it?
i pulled the distributor cap off- when the engine turns the points are opening and closing – but I see no small spark. The distributor cap is brand new.

You should replace the points, rotor and distributor cap if it’s been a long time since the last ignition tuneup. You should tap the starter in short bursts until one of the distributor cam nubs is pushing the points open as far as they can open. Then put the new points in and use a feeler gauge to set the point gap. Make sure to disconnect the spark plug wires one at a time and reconnect them to the same location on the new distributor cap or you’ll get the firing order mixed up which is a real pain to trace out and fix.

Take the lead off the top centre of the distributor & see if you get a spark from the end of the lead to the block whilst the engine turns. If you do, but don’t get a spark at the plug, the distributor cap’s probably lost it’s carbon brush out of the centre or you have a faulty or incorrect rotor arm.
If you have no spark at the lead from the coil, check the LT side of things: Do the points open & clse as the distributor turns? You should get a small, neat spark as this happens. If you get no spark or a big one, change the condensor on the base plate.
If you still have no life at the points, use a multimeter to check for a 12v supply to the live side of the points. If you haven’t got it there, your ignition switch is at fault.

that car probably has points. i would first see if the points slipped, if they are not opening and closing, like they should, you wont get any spark. check the rotor and inside the cap for burnt spots, also it might be the coil, even though you bought a new 1, you still can get a bad 1.
