Look at the type of maintenance ports that are on the system. If they are small (about 3/8" wide) and are threaded they are r12 and if they are about 1/2 inch in diameter and look like a quick connect with no threads it is r134a.

Some manufacturers used R-12 up through the 1993 model years, and switched to R-134 with the 1994 models. The EPA banned the production of R-12 ( Freon ) in the US effective January 1, 1996. More than likely your car was built to use R-134a refrigerant though. If it used R-12 originally though and has been converted to use the R-134a refrigerant, the attachment points where you hook up the hoses to recharge the A/C system will have also been changed. Different fittings for using R-12 vs R-134a. If the cars A/C system has been serviced and been functioning over the years I am sure it has probably been converted over to R-134a at some time if it didn't come that way. If not, the cost of the conversion is definitely cheaper than trying to obtain R-12 or similar replacement gas on the market. It has gotten very expensive, but it is still available in some places.

There should be a white tag in the engine compartment possibly in the area of the radiator and it will tell what kind of refrigerant is in the car. I'd say being that old it takes R-12. If it takes R-12 it is hard to come by but there are replacement refrigerants that are compatible with R-12. One is called freeze 12. I have heard that you can get it at some parts stores like NAPA. Check this web site

probably r-12. a retrofit isn't too expensive, but be aware a charge may reveal other expensive leaks in the system.
