There is a website for this it is a US government site called NHTSA:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/recallsearch.cfm
The recalls for this car include:
Airbags
Electrical system ignition module
Wheel caps/covers/hub
If it is for the convertible, there is another recall on the fuel system.
Since they are all ordered by the government, they are all free of charge and the dealer has to fix them if there is a problem.
The Saab 9-5 from 2001 is the last Saab/Scania engine design, The engine is a good one but known trouble spots include:
1) Oil needs to be changed on a regular interval with synthetic. Failure to do so will result in engine sludge and destroy the engine. Ensure that the seller has proof he did all the oil changes, preferably every 3000 to 5000 miles.
2) The ignition cassette on this model is troublesome. Every 60,000 to 100,000 miles it will go out and disable the car – resulting in a tow. That will cost you $600 if a mechanic has to replace it for you.
There have been reports of turbo failures as well but i have not seen much of that prior to 100,000.
Good luck with it.
