I’m having a used engine replaced in my Saab, and the dealership is giving me a hard time about documentation on the engine. Is there any markings on such and engine that would allow me to look up vehicle history? Is the vin on the engine?

engine # should be stamped on the engine block, that # should be entered onto your v5 and sent to dvla.

When cars come out of the factory, every engine block & cylinder head has a unique serial number that matches the last few numbers of the VIN on the vehicle in which it’s installed. On the 95-SE engine, the block serial number is located on the side, left of the flywheel and the cylinder head serial number is located on the same side as the knock sensor and just above the exhaust manifold.
